Robber Kills Pregnant Woman; Baby Later Delivered By Ceasarean Section
KEARNS, Utah (AP) _ A pregnant woman shopping in a video store with her three children was shot to death by a robber, authorities said, but doctors were able to save her nearly full-term fetus by a Ceasarean section delivery.
The robber shot Anna Holmes, 31, of West Valley City as he was leaving the video store Friday night, apparently because he was unhappy with the amount of cash he had gotten, said Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Lt. Bernard Bailey.
The gunman entered the Voyager Video store at 8:40 p.m., milled around for a few minutes, then turned to the clerk and demanded cash, Bailey said.
The clerk complied, he said, but the robber grumbled about wanting more money. He turned to leave, but as he left he pulled out a small caliber, silver-colored handgun, put it to Holmes’ head and pulled the trigger.
Witnesses told Bailey the man then said, ″That’ll take care of her.″
The amount of cash taken was undetermined.
In addition to the children whose ages ranged from 5 to 13 years old, and the clerk, about eight other people witnessed the shooting. All said it was unprovoked, Bailey said.
Holmes was taken to Pioneer Valley Hospital and later transported by helicopter to the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, where she was pronounced dead, said nursing supervisor Lynn Evans.
Her daughter was delivered by Caesarean section and was in critical condition, Evans said. The baby was about 32-34 weeks along, which is almost full-term, but was suffering from lack of oxygen.
Witnesses described the gunman as in his 30s or 40s, about 6 feet tall with graying hair and wearing a plaid shirt and blue jeans.Police searching for the man were preparing a composite drawing from witness descriptions, deputies said.
