Pentwater man dies in accident in Bear Lake
MANISTEE — A 20-year-old Pentwater man died and a 23-year-old Ludington man was critically injured when they were struck by a car Tuesday afternoon in Bear Lake.
According to a press release from Manistee County Sheriff John O’Hagen, the accident occurred on U.S. 31 near Russell Street in Bear Lake.
A preliminary investigation indicated both men were standing off of the roadway when they were struck by a vehicle driven by a 66-year-old Bear Lake woman. The 2013 Ford Taurus she was driving crossed the center line, left the roadway and struck the two men who were working in a construction zone. The driver was wearing a seatbelt.
O’Hagen said in a statement that, according to witnesses, the woman was driving at a high rate of speed.
The two men were working in a construction zone. The Ludington man sustained life-threatening injuries. He was taken by AeroMed to Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, and O’Hagen said he was listed in critical condition.
Speed is believed to be a contributing factor in the incident, and alcohol was not, O’Hagen said. The case is still under investigation.
The Manistee County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians, the Bear Lake Fire Department, Northflight EMS and the Victim Services Unit.
