Akron man guilty in fatal parking lot shooting, prosecutors say

AKRON, Ohio — A Summit County jury found an Akron man guilty Tuesday in the fatal shooting death of a 25-year-old man two years ago, prosecutors said. 

Darshawn T. McCormick, 27, was also charged with felonious assault and having a weapons under a disability in the Dec. 26, 2016, killing of Javanta Virden, according to the Summit County Prosecutor’s Office. 

Virden, 25, of Akron died at Summa Akron City Hospital after being shot in the head in a parking lot in the 1000 block of Ericsson Avenue following a fight with three men, authorities said.

Investigators identified McCormick as the shooter through witness statements and physical evidence collected at the scene, police have said.

McCormick is scheduled to be sentenced June 26 at 1 p.m. by Summit County Common Pleas Court Judge Jason Wells.
