Man steals officer’s gun and kills himself at Peninsula golf course, sheriff’s office says

PENINSULA, Ohio — A man shot and killed himself early Wednesday morning with a police officer’s gun following a fight with the officer at a Peninsula golf course, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office said. 

The 24-year-old man was found lying on the ground with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the sheriff’s office said. Paramedics took the man to Akron City Hospital for treatment, where he was later pronounced dead, officials said.

Investigators have not released the man’s identity.

Peninsula police about 5:15 a.m. investigated a report of property damage at the Brandywine County Club in the 5000 block of Akron-Peninsula Road. An officer spotted the man on the property and the two got into a struggle, authorities said. 

The man struck the officer in the head and knocked him to the ground, the sheriff’s office said. The officer was semi-conscious on the ground when the the man took the officer’s gun from his holster, sheriff’s office said. 

A golf course employee witnessed the encounter and tried to the help the officer, but the man ran away, officials said. 

A gunshot was heard a short time later, the sheriff’s office said. The officer radioed for help and set up caution tape. Investigators found the man dead at the golf course.

The Peninsula police officer was taken to the Akron General Hospital for treatment. He was later released.

Messages left for the Summit County Sheriff’s Office were not immediately returned. 

The shooting remains under investigation.
