CFISD approves calendar for 2018-19 school year
Students in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District will be packing their backpacks a bit earlier next school year.
The Cy-Fair board of trustees approved the 2018-19 instructional calendar Monday. For the district, Aug. 27 will be the first day of school for students, which is the earliest start date for the 2018-19 instructional calendar school year.
According to House Bill 1, passed by the 79th Texas Legislature, the school year may not begin before the fourth Monday in August.
Due to the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, after several delays, Cy-Fair ISD started the 2017-18 academic school year on Sept. 11. Before Hurricane Harvey, the first day for students was planned for Aug. 28.
A calendar committee was organized in the fall semester of 2017 with district-wide representation, including teachers, parents, community members, campus administrators, and support staff.
The school district committee worked to create the calendars using the 75,600 minutes needed to complete a school year now required by House Bill 2610, which replaces the former requirement of 180 instructional days for a school year.
Recommendations presented for the 2018-19 calendar to the board included Labor Day, Sept. 3, as a student/staff holiday; the calendar has a five-day Thanksgiving holiday (Nov. 19-23); a 10-day winter break is scheduled for students (Dec. 24 - Jan. 4, 2019); a five-day spring break is scheduled for March 11-15, 2019; Good Friday, April 19, 2019, is a student/staff holiday.
In 2019, inclement weather makeup days are designated for Feb. 18 and May 31.
Students can prepare to put their books away on May 30, 2019, the set date for the academic school year to come to a close.
