A sense of urgency took over local shops Monday as business owners and last-minute shoppers prepared for Valentine’s Day today. On the hilltop, employees at Kirlin’s Hallmark buzzed around the store helping mostly male shoppers. Jewelry and a card are still the standby gifts for men to buy their ladies, employees said. And though both men and women buy cards, they said, more men wait until the last minute. On Feb. 13 and 14, Kirlin’s estimates that business doubles from its regular pace. Over the course of the Valentine’s holiday season, they estimate around 500 cards will be sold. In the early afternoon, Cocoa Safari Chocolates employees helped shoppers select sweet treats. Co-owner Deb Fine said the holiday rush lasts about a week, with business peaking today.
