Wreck takes landmark sign out of business
A Whiskey Road landmark for one of Aiken’s most prominent attractions is gone in the wake of a traffic accident that occurred Friday morning.
A wreck involving a 36-year-old Aiken man driving a 2006 Ford Taurus caused substantial damage to the sign for H. Odell Weeks Activities Center, according to a report from Capt. Maryann Burgess, with the Aiken Department of Public Safety. A car that was parked nearby also sustained damage. No pedestrians were nearby and nobody was injured, she added.
The driver, she said, was on Whiskey Road and may have experienced a “medical issue” that contributed to the vehicle leaving the road. He was reportedly given citations for driving on a suspended license and for careless driving. The sign is to be replaced, Burgess said.
