Deadline draws near to enter Sandwich Fair competitions

August 1, 2018 GMT

SANDWICH – Time is of the essence to submit your best entries for the 131st Sandwich Fair – be they crocheted, baked, grown or anything in between.

The deadline to enter competition, which includes listing entries and paying the entry fee, is at 6 p.m.

Aug. 22, whether online, by mail or in person.

For information and forms, visit www.sandwichfair.com.

Mail the forms to P.O. Box 129, Sandwich, IL 60548, or drop off forms in person at 1401 Suydam Road on the west edge of Sandwich.

Tags for the entries will be available at the fair office by Aug. 30, and entries are to be brought to the fair Monday or Tuesday of fair week.

The fair is planned for Sept. 5 to 9. It brings previous blue-ribbon winners to compete in the exhibition halls and livestock area.

Sandwich Fair Association President Larry Dannewitz said there can be 25,000 entries, making it one of the largest-entered fairs in the Midwest.

Visitors can look forward to seeing stitchery or baked goods in the

Home Arts Building, the arrangements of vegetables, fruits, flowers and grains by gardeners or farmers

in the Horticulture Building, and

fine old glassware and an array of matchbooks in the Antiques and

Collectible Building.

The livestock area of the fairgrounds, on the western end of

the fairgrounds, is where beef and dairy cattle, draft horses, sheep, dairy goats, swine, rabbits and poultry

are shown.

Judging of livestock often takes all day during several days, and visitors usually bring lawn chairs or sit on wooden bleachers to watch owners show off their animals.

The 188-acre Sandwich Fairgrounds can be identified for its oaks, grassy areas and blacktopped walkways.

It also has a museum filled with photographs dating back as far as the 1800s, as well as old and new collectibles from the Sandwich Fair.
