24-6A baseball: Clear Springs clinches playoff berth
Dickinson clinched at least a co-championship and the No. 1 seed while Clear Springs secured a playoff berth with one game remaining in the District 24-6A baseball race.
The Gators defeated Clear Brook, 7-4, rallying from a 4-3 deficit after four innings. Dickinson scored twice in the fifth and seventh innings while taking advantage of seven Clear Book errors.
Brian Dawson pitched a complete game for Dickinson, striking out seven, while Wolverine Brandon Valdez worked five innings and also fanned seven.
Clear Springs defeated Clear Lake, 6-2, at Minute Maid Park, and took a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning. Dalin Stanton had two hits and drove in two runs for the Chargers while Drew Minter added two hits.
Charger pitcher Blake Schultz pitched six innings and struck out five.
In two other district games that had playoff implications, Clear Falls edged Clear Creek, 2-1, while Friendswood blanked Alvin, 2-0.
In the Knights’ win over Creek, Falls pitcher Tyler Zarella threw a complete game and struck out six while allowing just three hits. Braydon Fisher and Graham Whittington each knocked in runs for Falls while Ian Clark had two hits for the Knights.
Garrett Poston pitched 4.1 innings for Creek and drove home the only Creek run.
In Friendswood’s win, Mustang hurler Brandon Deskins pitched all seven innings and struck out nine. Friendswood scored both of its runs in the fifth with Jake Revere knocking in one of those.
Clear Falls, Clear Creek, Clear Brook and Friendswood are in contention for the final two spots in District 24-6A.
Only Clear Falls, with a win Friday over Creek, can clinch a playoff berth. If Creek, Brook and Friendswood win Friday, there will be a four-way tie for third place.
