Brrrrrr! Freeze chills area, again
Hard freezes continued to sweep across the Teche Area on Wednesday, prompting hazardous road conditions and school closures in Iberia, St. Martin and St. Mary parishes.
However, weather experts are predicting an end to the cold fairly soon as schools and government offices begin to reopen. Before the warm-up, Acadiana was an icy wonderland that caused problems and headaches for motorists who were unable to travel across bridges that iced up on major thoroughfares.
Teche Area residents also dealt with freezing temperatures on consecutive nights, Tuesday and Wednesday. At least Wednesday’s deep freeze didn’t include precipitation that forced many closures across the region on Wednesday.
Public schools in Iberia, St. Mary and St. Martin parishes are all closed today. They also were closed Wednesday.
Iberia Parish initially made a decision to reopen schools today, but ultimately decided to keep it closed due to extremely low water pressure, Iberia Parish Superintendent of Schools Dale Henderson said. The central offices for the school system will be open, however.
Temperatures fell into the lower to middle 20s Wednesday night in Iberia Parish, while temperatures dropped even lower, into the teens, farther north of Interstate 10, according to the National Weather Service in Lake Charles.
Wednesday afternoon, temperatures across southwest, central and south central Louisiana struggled to reach the freezing mark. Only a light freeze is expected for tonight, and much warmer conditions are forecast for the weekend, meteorologist Andy Patrick with the NWS said.
Due to several road closures, Progressive Waste postponed regular trash pickup Wednesday and will go on its usual routes the rest of the week a day late.
“Wednesday pickup will be on Thursday and Thursday will be on Friday,” Iberia Parish President Larry Richard said.
Road closures that occurred between the freezing conditions Tuesday and Wednesday included several stretches of U.S. 90, including its intersections with Louisiana 85, Louisiana 668, Louisiana 83, Lewis Street, Louisiana 675 and Louisiana 88. Louisiana 83 at the Patout Bridge also was closed.
All highway closures were reopened by Wednesday afternoon.
The Iberia Parish Courthouse, which was closed Tuesday and Wednesday, was scheduled to reopen today as well.
