MET JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP Several Greenwich golfers qualify for tournament
The 101st Met Junior Championship will take place July 16-19 at Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y., and several players from Fairfield County qualified to compete in the nation’s oldest junior championship.
Matt Camel, a Greenwich resident and rising senior at Brunswick School shot a 2-over-par 74 at a Met Junior qualifier last week at Fairview Country Club. He placed sixth at the qualifier and earned a spot in the Met Junior Championship.
Camel, who plays for Brunswick’s golf team and just competed in the Ike MGA Stroke Play Championship at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, N.Y., holed three birdie putts and parred 10 holes at the Met Junior qualifier.
Billy Nail, who will be a senior at Greenwich High School in the fall, also qualified for the Met Junior. Nail, a member of Greenwich’s FCIAC and state championship boys golf teams, finished in a seventh-place tie at the qualifier at Fairview, carding a 4-over-par 76.
Nail’s round included four birdies and six pars. Tying Nail was Brunswick student Lance Johnson. A member of the Bruins’ golf team, Johnson’s round of 76 at the Met Junior qualifier featured six birdies and two pars.
Tyler Donnellan of Greenwich shot a 5-over 77 (three birdies, eight pars) to qualify. Jack Boatright from Fairfield (one birdie, 12 pars) also shot a 76 at Fairview to advance to the Met Junior Championship.
WESTCHESTER OPEN QUALIFIERS
Numerous players from Connecticut-based clubs qualified for the 96th Westchester Open Championship, which is scheduled to take place July 9-10 at Sunningdale Country Club in Scarsdale, N.Y.
Todd Wingerter of Burning Tree Country Club placed second at a Westchester Open sectional qualifier at Knollwood Country Club on Tuesday, shooting a 2-under-par 69.
Casey Pyne of The Stanwich Club qualified for the Westchester Open by posting a 1-over-par 72 at Knollwood. Husband Kimmel of Tamarack Club shot a 2-over 73 to earn a spot in the Westchester Open, while TJ Trimboli (Shorehaven Golf Club), Brian Lamberti (Richter Park Golf Course) and Bart Weissman (Sterling Farms) each qualified by carding a 75. Benjamin Selkin of Burning Tree also shot a 73 at the sectional qualifier.
Also qualifying for the Westchester Open were Chris Strnad (Tamarack Country Club, 76) and Joseph Carrabino III (Woodway Country Club, 76).
At another qualifier for the Westchester Open at Rockland Country Club, Jeff Wattles (Greenwich Country Club) shot a 4-over 75 to move onto the tournament.
