ALUMNI NOTEBOOK: Fisbeck named Southland Conference Hitter of the Week

College Park alum Nate Fisbeck opened up the 2017 on a tear.

The sophomore at McNeese State ripped the cover off the ball to start his sophomore season as he homered in each of the first three games for the Cowboys and has 12 RBIs on the year.

The statistics put up was good enough to name him the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week.

In the season opener last Friday against Stony Brook, Fisbeck tripled along with a homer and knocked in seven runs. The seven RBIs were the most by any McNeese State player since 2001. In the first three games, Fisbeck had a slugging percentage of 1.231.

Fisbeck batted .189 as a freshman with four RBIs in 29 games (nine starts).

MORE BASEBALL

Durbin Feltman (Oak Ridge) was called upon to close out a tightly-contested game at Lupton Stadium against Penn State.

Feltman notched his first save of the year by not allowing a runner and striking out one as TCU prevailed over the Nittany Lions, 6-3, last Friday.

Feltman pitched 2/3 of an inning on Wednesday against UT-Arlington where he allowed one hit but no runs. TCU won 7-2.

Luken Baker (Oak Ridge) started off his sophomore campaign at TCU with a homer, two RBIs and six runs scored through four games. He’s batting .250.

Beau Ridgeway (College Park) pitched two innings in the Texas Longhorns’ win over Rice on Saturday. The former Cavalier walked one, but didn’t allow any hits during his stint on the mound. Ridgeway pitched 35 1/3 innings for Texas last year as a freshman and had an ERA of 3.31 with a 3-1 record.

Kevin Markham (Willis) leads UTSA in batting average at .450 through four games. The senior outfielder has one homer and six RBIs for the Roadrunners. He has a Conference USA-high seven doubles and six runs scored.

Chance Capps (Magnolia West) is batting .474 in six games played for Alvin Community College. The former Mustang has driven in three runs and scored five. Capps had a 4-for-4 game against Temple Junior College last Thursday.

Tyler Wernli (Montgomery) has appeared in three games on the mound so far this season for LaTourneau University. Wernli has struck out two batters and allowed three earned runs in 3 2/3 innings worked.

SOFTBALL

Sidney Salmons (The Woodlands) is off to a strong start to the season at Northwestern State. The former Lady Highlander has started all 10 games for the Demons and is batting .353 with eight RBIs. The junior outfielder leads the team with 12 hits, including a triple.

Kaitlyn Stavinoha (The Woodlands) is batting .417 through four games to start her sophomore season at UMass. The former Lady Highlander has scored three runs and driven in one.

Althought UTEP is 0-9 to start the year, Lindsey Sokoloski (Magnolia West) is currently third on the team in batting average at .269. The sophomore outfielder has scored one run and has one RBI.

MENS BASKETBALL

Brian Baehl (The Woodlands) leads Austin College in points and minutes per game during his senior season. The former Highlander is averaging 11.5 points per game while playing 30.8 per contest. He’s also third on the team in rebounding at 4.6 points per game and first in assists at 3.3.

Jeremy Swisher (The Woodlands Christian Academy) is closely following Baehl for the Kangaroos as he’s averaging 11.3 points per game. The former Warrior is averaging 3.8 rebounds per game. Austin College is 6-19 on the year.
