Lamar softball sweeps Alcorn State in doubleheader
Lamar softball swept a doubleheader with Alcorn State on Tuesday at the Lamar Softball Complex.
The Lady Cardinals (17-15) moved to 11-3 at home this season and continue Southland Conference play this weekend on the road against Southeastern Louisiana.
The games, originally scheduled for today, were moved up a day early because of the threat of rain.
“We didn’t play as well as we wanted to in both games,” Lamar coach Holly Bruder said. “But at least we didn’t play well and still won.”
The Lady Cardinals came through near the very end of Tuesday’s opening game.
Trailing 7-2 after five innings, the Lady Cardinals scored six runs in the final two frames to defeat the Lady Braves, 8-7.
Senior outfielder Ashley McDowell delivered the walk-off single, one of her team-best three hits.
Lamar’s seven-run outburst in the third inning was enough to run-rule Alcorn State, 9-1, in five innings in the second game of the doubleheader.
All seven of the runs came with two outs as the Lady Cardinals sent 11 batters to the plate in their best offensive inning of the season.
