Man arrested, abuse suspected
A man was arrested in North Platte Tuesday after witnesses and police said he made an intoxicated appearance at McDonald’s with his 5-year-old.
Just after 12:40 p.m., North Platte police were called to the restaurant in North Platte, where someone reported there was a drunken man in the restaurant with a child.
As an officer arrived, many witnesses said the man had just left the restaurant with the child, said Investigator John Deal. The officer spotted the man leaving the Taco Bell parking lot as he was about to turn onto Francis Street in a Ford Escape, Deal said.
The officer pulled over the 33-year-old man and “observed several indicators that [he] was intoxicated,” Deal said. The man failed field sobriety and breath tests. The man’s 5-year-old son was unharmed.
The man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence and child abuse, as well as for a 2014 domestic assault for which police had a warrant, Deal said.
The child’s mother took custody of the child.
On Wednesday, the man was charged in Lincoln County Court with driving while intoxicated — .15 or greater — and child abuse.
