A man who a young mother said looked “exactly like Charles Manson” was arrested Saturday after he allegedly tried to break into the woman’s apartment.

Darrell Sunderlage, 58, of Madison, was tentatively charged with burglary, criminal trespass to a dwelling and disorderly conduct, Madison police said.

The attempted break-in happened at 1 p.m. at a residence in the 500 block of West Doty Street.

The 20-year-old woman was bathing her baby daughter when she heard a noise at a window.

“Now holding her baby, she went to investigate and discovered a man outside, attempting to remove the screen,” said police spokesman Joel DeSpain.

The woman grabbed a canister of pepper spray and sprayed the man in the face, through the open window, with the suspect fleeing.

“She took her infant into the bathroom, locked the door and called 911,” DeSpain said.

The woman gave a very detailed description to officers who was located and arrested in the 400 block of North Frances Street.

Sunderlage has a long criminal history, ranging from theft to possession of cocaine to lewd and lascivious behavior, according to court records.
