Teachers Shoot Pupils in S. Africa
DURBAN,South Africa (AP) _ A teacher and a principal opened fire on angry high school students in South Africa, killing one student and injuring two others, police said today.
Students at Zithokozise High School in Durban demanded a refund Thursday for a trip because they were asked to pay $1.60 instead of $1.30, police spokesman Captain Vishu Naidoo said.
``The teachers locked themselves in the library when pupils started stoning them,″ said Mandla Msibi, a spokesman for the education department. As the pupils apparently tried to break in, the principal and another teacher opened fire, killing Sithembiso Gcwenya, 19, and injuring Sibusiso Mbutho, 19, and Bheki Mnyandu, 18, Msibi said.
The school was closed until further notice and the teachers were expected in court today on murder and attempted murder charges, Msibi said.
