Princess Anne Attends Funeral

September 18, 1998 GMT

LONDON (AP) _ Princess Anne attended the funeral Friday of her former father-in-law, Maj. Peter Phillips, who once famously described her as ``a great girl.″

The princess joined her ex-husband, Capt. Mark Phillips, and their two children, Peter, 21, and Zara, 17, at the packed village church of St. Peter and St. Paul at Great Somerford in western England.

After the service, Princess Anne chatted with her former husband and other mourners in the churchyard, then drove herself away in a dark blue Bentley. Her second husband, Capt. Tim Laurence, did not attend.

Maj. Phillips, 78, died Saturday at the Ilson House Nursing Home near Tetbury in southwest England after several years of ill health. His wife, Anne, died in 1988.

Phillips was thrust into the limelight in 1973 when his son began a romance with Queen Elizabeth II’s only daughter. The couple married that year, but divorced in 1992.
