Late Luther free throws sink Sabercats

DECORAH, Iowa — James Kappus hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds to play to give Luther College Saturday’s 64-63 men’s basketball win over visiting Maranatha Baptist University.

Micah Shepard led the Sabercats (9-8) with 20 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Jonathan Book contributed 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists.

David Lerma added 10 points and five boards while Matt Gill scored eight points off the bench. Justin Blake blocked three shots for MBU, which erased a 36-29 halftime deficit before falling.

MBU returns to action Tuesday with a visit from Northland. Luther improved to 5-14 with the victory.
