Glenn girls hoops cruises in sectional

John Glenn’s girls basketball team drubbed Jimtown 76-16 in a Class 3A John Glenn Sectional opener on Tuesday night. Kyannah Stull led the Falcons (20-4) with 31 points, all in the first three quarters. Mariah Plunkett had 16 points, and Morgan Plunkett scored eight. Bethany Hayden and Abby Machnic both tallied five points. Glenn led 23-0 after the first quarter. The Falcons next play on Friday night at about 6:30 p.m. CST versus Culver Girls Academy. In Tuesday night’s opener, South Bend St. Joseph beat Mishawaka Marian 61-42.

Adams wins in La Porte Girls Basketball Sectional


In the first round of the Class 4A La Porte Girls Basketball Sectional, South Bend Adams downed Mishawaka 67-51 on Tuesday night. The Eagles next meet Michigan City on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. The host Slicers face Plymouth in another sectional opener on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. South Bend Riley and South Bend Clay play in Wednesday’s second game at about 7:30 p.m. All times are CST.

Slicer boys hoops schedule change

La Porte’s JV and varsity boys basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 18, at South Bend Riley have changed. The Slicers will now travel to Riley on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The JV game will start at 5 p.m. CST, followed by the varsity.

Marquette’s Nolan earns IBCA weekly honor

Marquette sophomore Sophia Nolan was one of this week’s recipients of the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) player of the week honors. She joined Fort Wayne Canterbury senior Mason VanHouten, Logansport senior Matt Jennings, Warren Central senior Mack Smith, West Washington senior Michael Sizemore, Noblesville junior Emily Kiser and Greensburg junior Kyra Whitaker as honorees.

Nolan averaged 35.5 points in a pair of victories for the Blazers (17-5). The 6-1 forward had 34 points, six rebounds and two assists as Marquette routed North Newton 69-23. She followed with 37 points, seven rebounds and three assists in an 80-39 win over Gary Lighthouse. Over the two games, she sank 30 of 45 shots, 8 of 14 from three-point range and 3 of 3 free throws.

City gymnasts beat Lake Central

The Wolves on Monday swept the top four places in the all-around competition en route to a 106.925-98.625 win over Lake Central. Meghan Miller (35.6) won the all-around title, capturing first place on the vault (9.375), second on the uneven bars, third in the floor exercise and fourth on the balance beam. Caroline Weber (35.175) finished second all-around and first on the bars (9.1). Becca Jensen (34.5) was third all-around with a second-place finish on the floor and fourth on vault. Megan Gushrowski (34.475) placed fourth all-around with wins on the beam (9.225) and floor (9.15).


La Porte High FCA meeting Monday

The La Porte High Fellowship of Christian Athletes will meet on Monday at 8 p.m. at the home of Rylee Penzoil, 4222 Ridgeway. The guest speakers will be Jonell and Bryan McKenzie of Springfield, Ill. Jonell is a former Slicer 3-sport athlete and Homecoming Queen, while Bryan is Midwest Director of Football for FCA. All students in grades 9-12 are welcome.

Fish Lake Property Owners Association Ice Fishing Derby

The 45th annual Ice Fishing Derby, by the Fish Lake Property Owners Association, will be on Saturday, Feb. 4, from 5 a.m.-4 p.m. CST. Registration for the Ice Fishing Derby, for fishermen, is from 5-10 a.m. CST. Prizes are awarded for the longest fish in each of nine categories. Breakfast and lunch will be available, and free coffee will be available all day. Free Bingo from 12:30-3:30 p.m. CST. A silent auction and raffles will also be provided.
