Virginia R. Harms
Virginia Ruth Harms, 88, of Beatrice, passed away at Lakeview Living in Firth on Wednesday, August 29, 2018. She was born March 22, 1930 in Beatrice and was baptized shortly after her birth at the Beatrice Hospital. She attended her freshman year at Adams High School but went onto Filley High School where she graduated in 1948. She attended Peru State College one summer where she received her elementary teaching certificate. She taught one year at Little John Country School. Elmer Harms came to the Christmas program at Little John School where he met Virginia. Elmer and Virginia got married on March 25, 1950 at the American Lutheran Church of Adams and they lived and farmed on Elmer’s home place east of Pickrell where they ran a Grade A dairy operation for many years.
She was a former member of the American Lutheran Church of Adams where she attended Sunday School and was confirmed in 1945. She is a member of Zion Lutheran Church of rural Pickrell. She taught Bible school at Remmers School and at Zion while also teaching confirmation classes at Zion as well. Virginia was the first woman church council member serving for three years at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Pickrell. Virginia was an accomplished seamstress, sewing both girls’ wedding attire, accessories and most of their high school clothes. She enjoyed baking, bread and cinnamon rolls were her specialty. She crocheted many projects and quilted, she handed out 13 full or queen size quilts one Christmas. She always had a huge garden, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables. Virginia always had African Violets, at one time she had over 40.
Survivors include two sons, David Harms of Pickrell and Patrick Harms and wife Ava of Los Angeles, CA; two daughters, Ruth Wusk and husband Mert of Sterling and Joan Meyer of Beatrice; seven grandchildren; Jason Meyer and wife Jennifer, Bret Meyer, Chad Meyer and wife Jessica, Alex Wusk, Shalen Lundeen and husband Matt, Kevin and Henry Harms; six great-grandchildren, Treygan and Mace Keeler, Shelby Wusk and Rylan Meyer, Lex and Jordyn Lundeen; one future great-grandson Meyer; one sister, Vivian Zimmerman and husband Wayne of Beatrice; one brother, Virgil Lienemann and wife Marilyn of Omaha; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Lena (Hartog) Lienemann; her husband, Elmer, who died December 27, 2009; son-in-law, Dennis Meyer and one brother.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at Zion Lutheran Church of rural PIckrell with Pastor Jerry Gilbreath officiating. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 A.M. on Saturday morning at the church. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran cemetery of rural Pickrell. A memorial has been established to the church. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home of Beatrice on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 9:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. and at the church one hour preceding the services on Saturday.
