Lady O catches fire in win over Fairbury
Four three pointers in the fourth quarter propelled the Beatrice girls basketball team to a win over Fairbury Tuesday night.
The Lady O erased a five point deficit in the fourth quarter and then quickly built a lead of their own on their way to a 35-29 win over the Lady Jeffs.
Beatrice opened the fourth quarter staring at a 23-18 deficit, but Mak Hatcliff sparked the Lady O comeback with a three pointer to make it 23-21.
Fairbury’s Jessa Eden responded with a basket, but Hatcliff connected from long range again to make it 25-24.
On the ensuing defensive possession, a steal by Hatcliff led to an easy layup for Addie Barnard, giving Beatrice their first lead since early in the second quarter.
Carley Leners’ free throw extended the lead to 27-25. Fairbury’s Sara Huss tied the game back up with a basket, but Hannah Lytle then connected on consecutive three pointers to give Beatrice a 33-27 lead.
Leners extended the lead to 35-27 with two free throws. Fairbury’s Jaelle Johnson scored at the end of the fourth quarter, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Lady O held on for the 35-29 win.
Until the fourth quarter, points were hard to come by for both teams. Fairbury led 4-3 after the first quarter and 11-10 after the second quarter.
Fairbury used their size inside to gain that early advantage. Sara Huss had 13 points in the game while Jessa Eden had 12 for the Lady Jeffs. That duo scored all Fairbury’s first half points.
They continued to wreak havoc against the smaller Beatrice team in the third quarter, helping build a 17-12 lead. Addie Barnard used her speed and defense to score consecutive layups to cut the deficit back down to one at 17-16.
Barnard led the Lady O in scoring with 12 points.
A three point play by Eden was answered by a basket from Lexi Schwartz. Fairbury’s Ellie Ohlde finished the third quarter scoring with a basket, making it 22-18 entering the dramatic fourth quarter.
In addition to Barnard’s 12 points, Hatcliff, Leners and Lytle all had six points each while Schwartz had four points.
In addition to Fairbury’s two post players, Ohlde and Jaelle Johnson had two points each.
Beatrice is now 4-2 on the season and they will host Hastings Friday night. It will be a doubleheader with the Beatrice boys team. Between the two games, the 2008 Beatrice boys state championship team will be honored.
Fairbury is now 2-6 on the season and will be in action again Thursday when they host Humbodt-Table Rock-Steinauer.
