All Beaumont ISD teams win on Day 1 of YMBL Shootout

December 1, 2017 GMT

The annual YMBL tournament tipped off Thursday and all three Beaumont ISD boys teams started with victories.

West Brook kicked off the tournament with a 74-46 victory over Houston Scarborough, and Ozen followed with a 73-31 win against St. Anthony at Ozen High School.

Central beat Houston Pro Vision, 67-63, in its opening game at the Montagne Center.

All teams played twice on Thursday, the first day of the three-day tournament.

“It’s all about trusting the process this early in the season,” Ozen coach Michael Thomas said. “This is going to be a long weekend for all these teams but we we’re glad to start with a victory.”

Ozen, the only undefeated BISD team entering the day, got out to a quick start against St. Anthony.

After going ahead 8-5, they scored 10 of the next 12 points to take an 18-7 lead after a quarter.

The momentum rolled over to the second quarter, when Ozen allowed just six points and scored on the fast break, through second-chance opportunities and with 3-point shots.

The Panthers were ahead, 47-13, at halftime and Derrian Jones led all scorers with 12 points.

Ozen’s lead ballooned to 65-22 after three quarters.

Thomas played most of his bench players in the second half

with a big lead and potentially five more games this weekend.

“We need our bench to perform and play some big minutes in a long tournament like this,” Thomas said. “The more we can rely on them, the better off we’re going to be moving forward.”

Ozen’s girls team had the most impressive victory of the day, defeating Houston Pro Vision 82-6.

In addition to Ozen, local teams West Brook, Central, Port Arthur Memorial, Silsbee and Legacy Christian are in the tournament on the girls’ side.

Legacy Christian won the YMBL tournament last season.

Day two games start at 9 a.m. Games are at Ozen High School and Lamar’s Montagne Center and McDonald Gym.
