Reece drops City Council bid; pursues BISD seat

February 22, 2017 GMT

Kevin Reece withdrew his candidacy for a Beaumont City Council seat today, one of two elections for which he filed on Friday.

The withdrawal letter, sent to City Clerk Tina Broussard, means Reece will run for the Beaumont ISD seat.

State election law prohibits a candidate to run in two non-compatible elections at the same time.

Reece had filed to run for council in Ward 3. His withdrawal ensures the reelection of incumbent Councilman Audwin Samuel.

Reece, son of current elected school district trustee member Woodrow Reece, is running for the school board’s District 4 seat. The elder Reece is part of the old school board set aside by the Texas Education commissioner and replaced with a board of managers in 2014. Though those school board members still are nominally the elected trustees, they have no authority in school district issues.

The Beaumont ISD has not had an election since May 2011. Even after the May 6 election, there is no timetable posted by the Texas Education commissioner to seat an elected board.

The commissioner is selecting a replacement board of managers to take over from the originally appointed board.
