New dog area in Beaver Dam has rules set in place

March 7, 2017 GMT

The off leash dog area inside of Patrick Parker Conley Park will have some rules in place when the park opens.

John Neumann, parks and forestry supervisor, said that the rules he presented are based on rules developed by the American Kennel Club, River Run Dog Park in Columbus and the Waupun dog park rules.

The park will be open from 6 a.m. to sunset, seven days a week and year round. In order to use the park, an owner’s dog will need a license. Vaccinations are not required, but are strongly recommended, however a current rabies tag is required.

Alderperson Jon Abfall asked how many dog park users typically pick up dog feces and how that will be enforced.

Neumann replied saying that most people pick up after their dog. In addition, he said he is relying on that dog park users will self enforce the rules, but his staff will also step in as needed.

Mayor Tom Kennedy said that a second dog area in Beaver Dam has been a very popular idea and warned against micromanaging the park rules.

The city has set aside $19,000 for the construction of this dog area. A dog area already exists at Edgewater Park north of Beaver Dam.

The set of rules was unanimously approved by the committee.
