Bluefield tops Big Blacks
BLUEFIELD, W.Va. — Latrell Collier and Jason Edwards both had 100-yard rushing performances Saturday for Class AA No. 1 Bluefield in a 49-17 playoff quarterfinal victory against No. 7 Point Pleasant.
Collier rushed 11 times for 167 yards and touchdown plays of 78, 29 and 20 yards. Edwards picked up 102 yards on 11 carries including a 61-yard touchdown. Chandler Cooper passed for 114 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
Bluefield (12-0) piled up 450 total yards while Point Pleasant (9-3) had 341.
Justin Brumf ield of the Big Blacks carried 25 times for 134 yards. Cason Payne was 27-for-35 passing for 204 yards with TD throws to Tucker Mayes and Alec Smith.
Payne’s favorite pass target was Josh Wamsley with 16 catches for 102 yards.
MINGO CENTRAL 53, LIBERTY HARRISON 21: Dawson Elia ran for three touchdowns and caught a 26-yard scoring pass from Jeremy Dillon Friday night as host Mingo Central earned a 53-21 victory Friday against Liberty Harrison in the Class AA quarterfinals.
Dillon completed 5 of 7 passes for 106 yards and two TDs and ran eight times for 144 yards and two scores. Josh Reed returned a fumble 63 yards for a TD for the No. 1 seeded Miners (12-0), defending state champions.
For the Mountaineers, Dalton Westfall carried 28 times for 101 yards and two touchdowns. Broderick Lantz added 84 yards on 18 attempts.
ST. MARYS 47, TUG VALLEY 0: Jaiden Smith ran 14 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns and the Class A defending champion Blue Devils (10-1) picked up a road win Friday.
Also for No. 5 St. Marys, which ran for 426 yards, Matt Eichhorn gained 72 yards on just four carries.
For the No. 4 seed Panthers (10-2), who saw an eight-game win streak halted, Nathan Muscat completed 6 of 11 passes for 107 yards and Noah Lucas ran 11 times for 49 yards.
CAPITAL 48, UNIVERSITY 24: Kerry Martin threw for 204 yards and two touchdowns and ran 6 yards for another score as sixth-seeded Capital (9-3) advanced to the Class AAA semifinals for a fifth straight season with a Friday victory at previously unbeaten University (11-1), the No. 3 seed.
Anthony Pittman caught one of Martin’s TD passes and returned an interception 31 yards for a score. K.J. Taylor brought back the opening kickoff 89 yards for a Capital TD.
For the Hawks, Clay Bailey passed for 210 yards and two touchdowns and Robert Sanders ran 50 yards for a score. University turned the ball over five times.
MARTINSBURG 54, JOHN MARSHALL 0: Tyson Bagent threw four touchdown passes, including the 100th of his career, as defending Class AAA champion Martinsburg (12-0) shut out a second straight playoff opponent Friday as the No. 2 Bulldogs downed No. 10 John Marshall.
Bagent also broke t he playoff percentage record by completing 15 of 16 passes (.938) to surpass former Martinsburg quarterback Joey Yurish, now the head coach at Hedgesville.
Bagent threw TD passes of 20 to Grant Harman, 1 and 18 to Teddy Marshall and 14 to Jarod Bowie.
EAST HARDY 42, SHERMAN 14: Clay Skovron had touchdown runs of 4, 2 and 5 yards Saturday for Class A No. 1 East Hardy (12-0) against No. 9 Sherman (9-3). Aden Funkhouser caught two touchdown passes.
