Greater Bridgeport St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Committee appoints new chairperson

June 13, 2018 GMT

BRIDGEPORT — The Greater Bridgeport St. Patrick’s Day Celebration Committee recently elected a Fairfield resident to be the committee’s new chairperson.

John Brannelly Jr., of Fairfield, replaces the former chairperson — Beacon Falls resident Connie Beagan.

“(He) is a natural choice to be the chairperson given his occupation as a fundraiser and his involvement in many local charities,” said Fred Garrity Jr., the committee’s treasurer who nominated Brannelly for the position.

The committee approved Brannelly in a unanimous decision.

Brannelly works for the American Heart Association and is involved in Irish organizations, including the Gaelic American Club and the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He volunteers for the Fairfield Fire Commission, City Lights Gallery and St. Vincent’s Medical Center. He recently organized a fundraiser for the Fairfield County Puerto Rican Day Parade.

Next year’s parade will take place on March 15, 2019. Until then, the committee will work year-round to raise about $75,000 to pay for the parade and funds its scholarship program.

Now, the committee is tasked with selecting a Grand Marshal. Nominations for the position are due next week. Grand Marshal candidates must of be Irish descent, active and strong supporters of community organizations and events and reside in the Greater Bridgeport Area.

All nomination should be submitted in writing by mail or email and received by June 19. Nominations should be sent to Ann Marie and David Curtin, the Grand Marshals from 2018, at 155 Edgewood Road, Fairfield, Conn., 06825 or at dwcurtin@optonline.net.

The original parade committee was formed in 1982 when Bridgeport Mayor Leonard Paoletta asked City Clerk Catherine Brannelly to organize a St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

The parade has been a tradition in Downtown Bridgeport since 1983. The parade has been held every year no matter the weather.
