At the encouragement of a family friend working in construction in California, the family moved to Escondido in 1960 where Merwin was a carpenter and building contractor. Helen returned to school in the early 1970′s to earn her RN degree and worked as a registered nurse until they retired and moved to Ellensburg in 1989 where Merwin built their retirement home. Deeply committed to her faith, she was an active member of Emmanuel Faith Community Church in Escondido, participating in numerous music ministries (violin and voice), children’s programs and hosting of foreign students from around the world.
