CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) _ U.S. Xpress Enterprises, Inc. (USX) on Thursday reported a loss of $8.9 million in its first quarter.

The Chattanooga, Tennessee-based company said it had a loss of 17 cents per share. Losses, adjusted for non-recurring costs and asset impairment costs, were 2 cents per share.

The results surpassed Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of four analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for a loss of 3 cents per share.

The company posted revenue of $517.2 million in the period, which missed Street forecasts. Three analysts surveyed by Zacks expected $522 million.
