Smoke at Agrium plant near Soda Springs causes minor property damage

February 17, 2017 GMT

Smoke from smoldering insulation in the Agrium fertilizer plant near Soda Springs resulted in minor property damage Thursday.

Late in the morning, a small amount of smoke was observed emanating within a process area. Operations personnel placed steam over the area and called in Agrium’s emergency response team, which arrived and established a barricade around the area. The team then called the Caribou County Fire Department, which was made aware of the situation and was put on standby.

No fire was observed, and the smoke was extinguished. There were no injuries, and work in the area has resumed as normal.

It is unknown exactly what caused the smoke. Agrium will conduct an incident investigation to determine the cause.
