MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (AP) — A man driving the wrong way on the Indiana Toll Road was killed when his car collided head-on with a truck hauling a load of bread, police said.

Richard D. Reese, 57, of LaPorte was pronounced dead at the scene of Monday evening’s crash in northwestern Indiana’s LaPorte County that left his car crushed into an unrecognizable hulk of metal.

Indiana State Police said preliminary findings show that Reese was traveling westbound in the toll road’s eastbound lanes when his car collided head-on with a tractor-trailer operated by Black Horse Carriers. The driver of the truck, which was hauling an estimated 20,000 pounds (9.071 kilograms) of bread, was not injured.

Toxicology reports are pending.
