Dad who was smoking pot pleads guilty to child’s heat death
LAKE HAVASU CITY, Ariz. (AP) — A 24-year-old man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder by domestic violence in the 2019 death of his 20-month-old daughter whom he left alone in his hot car while he was smoking marijuana at a friend’s residence in Lake Havasu City.
Under a plea agreement with prosecutors, Ty W. Martin will serve 16 years in prison without the possibility of early release in exchange for dismissal of felony child abuse charges, the Today’s News-Herald reported.
Martin pleaded guilty Friday in Mohave County Superior Court. Sentencing is set for June 19.
According to police, police responding to reports of an unresponsive child found Martin trying to resuscitate Madison Martin.
The child was left in her father’s vehicle with the air conditioner on its lowest setting for up to 45 minutes before he returned, police said.
The Mohave County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death accidental and the result of severe hyperthermia and dehydration.
