Chuck Grassley: Trump should be applauded for DACA, immigration plan

Sen. Charles Grassley said Wednesday that President Trump ought to be “applauded” for giving DACA recipients a path to citizenship.

“Everybody in the immigration community ought to be applauding him, particularly when there’s a path to citizenship after 10 or 12 years,” the Iowa Republican said on Fox Business.

He said that Mr. Trump can help bring together lawmakers to pass a bill that both addresses theDeferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program which protects immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children from deportation and puts an end to the chain migration and VISA lottery systems.

“We can do all of those at one time,” Mr. Grassley said.

He said that despite some conservative reservations on a path to citizenship for DACA recipients, most lawmakers agree that they are not the ones who broke the law.

“It seems to be the right thing to do when kids were brought here by their parents, and they may be technically violating the law, but as a practical matter, their parents are the ones that violated the law,” Mr. Grassley said.
