OU Football: Baker Mayfield, now a Heisman Trophy favorite, asked about Oklahoma State counterpart Mason Rudolph
NORMAN – Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield has emerged as the new Heisman Trophy favorite, while the Sooners maintained the fourth-best odds to win a national championship.
Mayfield (7/4) jumped over Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson (11/2) in odds released on Monday by Bovada.
USC quarterback Sam Darnold (11/2) is third on the list. Oklahoma State quarterback Mason Rudolph and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley are tied for fourth with 9/1 odds.
Mayfield was asked on Monday if success from other quarterbacks push him to be better.
“I think that comes with the fact that I’m a very competitive guy and I want to be the best,” Mayfield said. “I wouldn’t say someone else’s performance contributes to mine. I’m self-motivated and I want to get the job (done). What they’re doing doesn’t matter.”
Mayfield was asked if he watched Rudolph lead OSU to a 59-21 win at Pittsburgh over the weekend.
“Yeah, we were in the hotel for a later game so we got to watch some of that,” Mayfield said. “They’re playing well and there’s no question about that. Their offense is very talented and guys are making competitive catches for him. He’s doing a great job of getting the ball in their hands.”
Alabama (2/1), Clemson (11/2) and USC (7/1) have higher odds than OU to win the College Football Playoff. Ohio State (17/2) is next, while Oklahoma State’s odds went from 18/1 last week to 9/1 this week for the sixth-best spot.
