Zoo to celebrate International Red Panda Day
BRIDGEPORT — Saturday, Sept. 15 is International Red Panda Day, and Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo, 1875 Noble Ave., Bridgeport, is celebrating as only it can. The zoo invites visitors to see Rochan and Meri, its red pandas, and to take a peek at the new habitat being built for them. The zoo’s education staff will also give talks on these adorable members of the Beardsley family.
This year, more than 100,000 visitors are expected at accredited zoos on International Red Panda Day to become Red Panda Rangers — a special title given to children who help spread the word that red pandas are experiencing a loss of nesting trees and bamboo, leading to a decline in population. According to the zoo, there are fewer than 10,000 red pandas in the wild.
