St. Louis County Jail guard taken to hospital after beating

CLAYTON, Mo. (AP) — Authorities say a female corrections officer at the St. Louis County Jail was taken to a hospital after a male inmate attacked her.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the guard was conscious and speaking Thursday after suffering serious injuries to her face and hands.

St. Louis County spokesman Doug Moore said the attack happened Wednesday after the guard told the inmate that he had reached his time limit on a phone call and he refused to return to his cell. Another inmate stopped the beating. The county is not publicly releasing the guard’s name.

Guards at the jail have pepper spray but are not armed with a stun gun or firearm because of the risks of those weapons being used against them. However, the guard was able to push an emergency button, and other guards soon arrived, Moore said.

The inmate had been detained on a first-degree robbery charge in St. Louis County but also faces felony charges in St. Louis, Moore said.

Scott Anders, acting director of Justice Services for the county, said in a statement that he is working to move the inmate to another facility.

The county is down 78 corrections officers out of 170 budgeted positions and has been recruiting for the openings, Moore said.
