AG investigates parking lot incident as possible hate crime
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (AP) — The attorney general’s office is investigating as a possible hate crime an incident in which a white motorist allegedly aimed her vehicle at a Black man and his two nephews.
Michael Stiggle, 50, said he had to jump to get out of the way of the vehicle in a Walmart parking lot.
The motorist was charged with driving to endanger, and Presque Isle Police sent the information to the attorney general’s office for review. There was no court paperwork indicating whether the motorist had an attorney, a court clerk said.
Hate crimes are on the rise in Maine with the number quadrupling over the past year, the Bangor Daily News reported. There were 83 reported hate crimes in 2020, more than the previous three years combined.
