Mexico battling blaze aboard fuel tanker off Gulf coast
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s state-owned oil company says it is working to extinguish a blaze aboard a loaded tanker ship in the Gulf of Mexico.
The tanker Burgos was carrying about 168,000 barrels of gasoline and diesel fuel. Mexico’s Navy rescued 31 crew members and no injuries were reported. Petroleos Mexicanos, or Pemex, documents show the Burgos has a total capacity of about 270,000 barrels.
Firefighting boats were working to extinguish the fire Saturday about seven nautical miles off the coast of the port city of Boca del Rio.
There were no immediate reports of fuel spills and the cause of the fire was unknown. Pemex said through Twitter that it did not pose a threat to the population.
The Veracruz Port Authority said the Burgos was scheduled to dock Sunday morning.
