Grand Haven to repair lighthouses with help of fundraising
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. (AP) — The city of Grand Haven is expected to open its two iconic lighthouses to the public as museums, pending fundraising efforts to repair and renovate.
The Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy has been raising money to fix the interior of the buildings, according to Wood-TV.
“The vision is to preserve the lighthouses and interpret them for educational purposes, bring the kids out and show them how the lighthouses were years ago,” said Dave Karpin, president of the Lighthouse Conservancy.
Karpin says they will need to raise about a million dollars in the next couple of years.
The fundraiser for the lighthouse renovations is planned during Winter Fest in Grand Haven, where live and silent auctions will be held.
“We hope to get a jump start on our fundraising efforts after the auction,” Karpin said. “Marushka, a local screen printing shop is also selling T-shirts to help support us.”
If all goes to plan, the Lighthouse Conservancy plans to open the lighthouses in 2021 on a part-time basis.
