Gelzinis: Professional courtesy between sex predators
If White House video is to be believed, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Ashley Judd weren’t the only beautiful people who knew Harvey Weinstein was a bloated sexual predator.
“I’ve known Harvey Weinstein for a long time,” President Donald J. Trump said a couple of days ago, before getting into his presidential helicopter. “And I’m not at all surprised to see it.”
Of course he isn’t. How could he be?
The most telling part of Trump’s answer was the wry grin that illuminated his orange face. Indeed, it was the recognition of like minds. How could Donald Trump ever be surprised by Harvey Weinstein?
You’ve heard of the Blues Brothers? Think of Harvey and The Donald as the Sleaze Brothers.
How could a president who’s had more than a dozen women accuse him of various forms of lechery be surprised by a fellow ogre, who’s trolled the same corridors of power and celebrity?
How could the star of the Billy Bush “I grab them by the …” video ever be surprised by Weinstein’s gross assaults on women?
“He knew I was engaged to someone else. He was relentless. I didn’t know how to handle it. The next thing I knew he was pushing me against a wall and his hands were all over me.”
No, that’s not the testimonial of a Harvey Weinstein victim. It was one of Trump’s many attempted conquests who has brought suit against him. What is that age-old saying about people in glass houses throwing stones?
I will say this much for our president. When it comes to badmouthing Harvey Weinstein, The Donald knew enough to keep his mouth shut, which makes him no different from the Hollywood royalty who kept their mouths shut for too many years.
At first glance, this is one of those culture war issues Trumpians love to pounce on. But when it comes to Harvey Weinstein, what they conveniently forget is that Donald Trump was a shameless star-chaser. Small wonder that he would insert himself in Weinstein’s star orbit.
The difference here between Trump and Weinstein is in the denial of reality. When reporters outside the White House the other day asked Trump about the difference between Weinstein and the Billy Bush tape, his reply was “locker room talk.”
What a threadbare lie.
For Donald Trump to be neither surprised nor disgusted by Harvey Weinstein’s exploits really speaks volumes about that brotherhood of powerful men who disrespect women as their right.
