Man ID’d by Paper To Be Deported

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) _ A man who was arrested by federal agents after a newspaper article identified him as an illegal alien has been ordered to leave the country.

An immigration judge in Atlanta on Tuesday gave Julio Granados 14 days to return to Mexico on his own rather than face immediate deportation.

That means Granados may one day be allowed to return legally. However, Granados’ attorney, Margaret Reilly, said he would be unlikely to qualify because he has no relatives here and no specialized work skills.

Granados was picked up in March at the restaurant where he worked two weeks after The News & Observer of Raleigh published an article about his journey from Mexico to North Carolina. The article identified him by name as an illegal alien.

Some Hispanic leaders in Raleigh were angry about the article.

However, the reporter said Granados had given her permission to print his name, his work place and the fact that he had entered the country illegally, and said they had discussed the problems that might result from the article.
