New Burlington high school could cost up to $200 million

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) —

Building a new high school in Burlington could cost up to $200 million, according to initial cost estimates, after polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, were detected in air samples and building material at the old school.

The school has been closed since September 2020. Students are now attending school in a retrofitted former department store downtown.

The school district has decided that it would be too costly to clean up the chemical contamination and salvage the old school so the plan is to build a new facility next to the condemned building, WCAX-TV reported.

The costs could range from $161 million to $207 million, according to early plans discussed this week, the news station reported.

The estimates do no include the costs of demolishing the old building and cleaning up the site, which is estimated to cost up to $29 million.

Superintendent Tom Flanagan said the school was due for an update.

“It’s not a great building. It’s a series of different buildings connected by pathways, so the accessibility issues are pretty significant and just the flow of the building is not great,” he said.

The school board hopes to present a full plan to voters in November. Flanagan said he hopes the new school will be open in 2025.
