Cleveland Orchestra’s ‘Star-Spangled Spectacular’ to include free Mitchell’s ice cream samples
CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland Orchestra left one important detail out of its original 2018 “Star-Spangled Spectacular” news announcement: there will be ice cream.
On Monday, the group released further details of its July 6 Independence Day celebration, the most notable of which is that during the three hours before the 9 p.m. concert, Cleveland-based Mitchell’s ice cream will be giving out free samples.
The samples will be distributed on site, at Cleveland’s Mall B, and will be handed out on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. Heartier fare will be available for purchase from on-site food trucks, and guests are encouraged to bring picnics.
The orchestra Monday also announced two other pre-concert attractions and revealed that WKYC-TV 3 new anchor Russ Mitchell will host the event. From 7 to 8 p.m., listen for performances by the Cleveland Police Pipes & Drums and Full Metal Racket, the 122nd Army Band of the Ohio National Guard.
The free performance by the Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by music director Franz Welser-Most, begins at 9 p.m. Fireworks are scheduled to follow at 10:15 p.m., weather permitting. In case of inclement weather, the concert will shift from Mall B to Cleveland Public Auditorium, at 500 Lakeside Ave.
