Cleveland singer D.R. King wows the judges again on ‘The Voice’

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The dream to become “The Voice” is still alive for Cleveland native D.R. King.

In his second appearance on NBC’s singing competition, the former music teacher at Hope Academy won his Battle Round against Jackie Foster. King and his fellow teammate on Team Kelly went note-for-note during a powerful rendition of Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times”

The song at one point moved judge Alicia Keys to tears and brought the duo’s mentor Kelly Clarkson to her feet. When it was over, the judges were faced with a difficult decision over who moves on and who goes home.

“D.R., I think you’re a total stunner,” Keys told King, who grew up singing at the Church of God Pentecostal on the west side. “It is just so beautiful to hear the capacity of your voice and the way you have control of all sides of it.”

But both Adam Levine and Blake Shelton sided with Jackie. That left the decision up to the original “American Idol” Clarkson.

“The winner of this battle is D.R.,” she declared.

With that the Cleveland School of the Arts graduate moves on to the Knockout Rounds. The journey isn’t over for Jackie either. The three remaining judges each tried to steal the 21-year-old Californian, with Jackie ultimately deciding to join Team Adam.

“The Voice” airs locally Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on WKYC Channel 3.
