• An estimated 35 million to 40 million or about 100,000 people a day visited the Mall of America during its first year of operation. It currently employs 11,000 full-time positions and has 12,750 free parking spots.

1968 – 50 years ago

• Dr. Paul Belau, a member of the Mayo Clinic staff since 1963, has been named deputy county coroner. He received his M.D. from the University of Minnesota Medical School and entered the Mayo Foundation as a follow in 1960.

• Earl McGee, IBM placement counselor, told an audience at Bethel Lutheran Church to do one small thing this week for equality and to stand up for respect and elimination of subtle discrimination.

1943 – 75 years ago

• Another fighting family with five sons in the armed forces is the Robert Franz family of St. Charles, formerly of Hammond. Boys include Robert (Navy), Vernon (Army air force), Arnold (Army), Donald (Navy) and Harris (Army).


• Ed Rundell took first place in a golf tournament held at the Rochester Golf and Country Club with a 76 net score. Second place went to Ned Cook.

1918 – 100 years ago

• Mennonites, who are conscientious objectors to military service, are going to Canada in large numbers from the United States where they say they will have a better chance to live their life.

• Horrors of war are being brought home to people of this section of the state more and more. Yale Squier of Mazeppa, 24, is reported to have died in France on June 26. Young Squier was in the ambulance corps.

Ten years ago: Todd Bachman, the father of 2004 volleyball Olympian Elisabeth “Wiz” Bachman, was stabbed to death by a Chinese man in Beijing in an apparently random attack just hours after the start of the Olympic Games. (The assailant took his own life.) Mariel Zagunis led a U.S. sweep of the women’s saber fencing for the first American medals of the Games. Comedian Bernie Mac died in Chicago at age 50.

Five years ago: President Barack Obama promised to work with Congress on “appropriate reforms” for the domestic surveillance programs that stirred criticism at home and abroad. President Obama signed into law a measure restoring lower interest rates for student loans. Infamous drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero walked free after 28 years in prison when a Mexican court overturned his 40-year sentence for the 1985 kidnap and killing of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent Enrique Camarena.


One year ago: North Korea’s army said it was studying a plan to create an “enveloping fire” in areas around the U.S. territory of Guam with medium- to long-range ballistic missiles. Prosecutors in Florida said golfer Tiger Woods had agreed to plead guilty to reckless driving and would enter a diversion program that would allow him to have his record wiped clean; he’d been charged with DUI in May when he was found asleep in his car, apparently under the influence of a prescription painkiller and sleeping medication.
