Margaret Lambert: Speak up June 30 for frac sand ban in Winona County
It is not often one has the opportunity to have a role in a decision that will play a part in the long-term future of where he or she lives. The Winona County Planning Commission has given citizens that chance by scheduling a public hearing on June 30 regarding the proposed frac sand ban.
One of the reasons I chose to live in Winona County is its beautiful and unique environment. I fear if we allow frac sand mining, through lack of foresight we are embarking on an endeavor with unknown, long-term consequences to that environment. Water quality issues, land degradation through mining and erosion, and a breakdown of county infrastructure are only a few of the negative consequences of frac sand mining.
Attend the public hearing on June 30 starting at 7 p.m. at the Tau Center, 511 Hilbert St. in Winona. Voice your concern for the long-term future of Winona County.
