IN THE NEWS: AMAZON’S ALEXA - HEALTH
LONDON (AP) — Squeamish about barking out commands to digital voice assistants about what music you like or what kind of movies you want to watch? Imagine having such devices know what medical problems you might have. Britain’s health care service says it is teaming up with Alexa _ Amazon’s digital voice helper _ to help users answer medical questions. The responses will come from the official government health site. But some critics say the problem isn’t accuracy, but privacy. Concerns have been raised about systems like Alexa listening to and recording conversations in homes. Just last month, a lawsuit filed in the U.S. said Amazon is breaking laws in eight states by recording children through Alexa without consent.
IN THE NEWS: FRANCE TECH TAX CHALLENGED
WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House is preparing for a diplomatic battle with France _ over the way the government there is treating high tech companies. The Paris government is proposing a tax on internet giants like Google, Amazon and Facebook. The U.S. Trade Representative says the tax _ expected to be passed by French lawmakers today _ unfairly targets American companies. If the Trump administration agrees that the tax violates trade rules with the U.S., it could trigger U.S. taxes on French imports. Last year, the Trump administration used the same rules to impose tariffs on $250 billion worth of Chinese imports.

CYBERSPACE (AP) — Things are back to normal now. But for a while yesterday, air traffic in and out of London’s Gatwick Airport ground to a halt. The airport wasn’t more specific about the problem, except to say it lasted for about 90 minutes. Gatwick is the U.K.’s second-busiest airport _ and is especially busy during this, the summer holiday season.
