Photo shows 2018 suicide attempt in Afghanistan, not Taliban killing
CLAIM: Photo shows the Taliban hanging a man in front of his son in Afghanistan.
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The photo shows a suicide attempt in Takhar, a province in northeastern Afghanistan, that occurred in March 2018. Local media outlets reported on it at the time and video footage shows onlookers rescuing the man.
THE FACTS: On Thursday, a photo of a young boy crying, behind a man attempting to hang himself, circulated on Twitter with false claims.
Twitter users falsely suggested the Taliban had hanged the man.
“Taliban kill a man in front of his son, this is #afgahnistan under Taliban regime, where’s human rights? Where are you United Nation?” stated a false tweet that misspelled Afghanistan.
On March 26, 2018, multiple media outlets posted photos and videos of a man who reportedly tried to hang himself in front of Takhar’s provincial government building. Video shows that locals quickly intervened and rescued the man.
