Tweet from Trump saying he won’t contract coronavirus is a fake
CLAIM: A tweet from President Donald Trump reads, “I will never contract the novel coronavirus.”
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The tweet is fabricated.
THE FACTS: Early Friday morning, Trump announced on Twitter that he and first lady Melania Trump had tested positive for COVID-19
An hour later, social media users began sharing an image of a fake tweet that appeared to show the president vowing he would never get the virus.
“I will never contract the novel coronavirus,” reads the purported tweet, which is time stamped Oct. 1, 2012. A user shared an image of the tweet with the comment, “Wow. There’s always a tweet.”
The 2012 post does not appear in the Trump Twitter Archive, which archives Trump’s tweets, or on Politwoops, a database of deleted politicians’ tweets maintained by ProPublica.
The fake post is dated nearly eight years before SARS-CoV-2, the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19, was first identified.
