Photo shows Biden kissing his granddaughter, not a 15-year-old
CLAIM: Photo shows Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden kissing a 15-year-old girl on the lips.
AP’S ASSESSMENT: False. The photo shows Biden giving his 19-year-old granddaughter, Finnegan, a kiss during a campaign stop in Iowa in February.
THE FACTS: A photo of Biden giving his adult granddaughter a peck on the lips in front of an audience in Iowa is being shared with false claims saying it shows him kissing a 15-year-old girl.
“Here’s your wannabe Pedo-in-Chief kissing a 15 year old girl on the lips,” reads a Facebook post shared more than 1,400 times. “Still think he’s the Christian choice?!”
A reverse image search reveals the photo was taken on Feb. 2, at a campaign event in Dubuque, Iowa. At the event, Biden introduced his granddaughter, Finnegan Biden, who was born in 2000 and was 19 at the time of the event.
In his remarks, Biden said teenage girls sometimes get embarrassed of their dads, but granddaughters don’t feel the same way about their grandfathers.
“You always love your dad,” he said. “You don’t always like your dad sometimes. But granddaughters not only love their dads — their grandpops — they always like them, and that’s the great thing.”
A video from the event shows he then kissed his granddaughter briefly on the lips, before telling the audience, “I want you to meet Finnegan.”
