Rapper Says James Caan Pulled Gun So He Had the Actor Arrested

March 11, 1994 GMT

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ James Cann, who played a cocky gangster in ″The Godfather,″ was arrested after a rap musician accused him of pulling a gun during an argument.

Caan was booked Thursday night for investigation of brandishing a weapon, said police Sgt. Christopher Vasquez. He was released on his own recognizance.

The actor told police he was going to his brother’s apartment when he got into an argument about vandalism to a vehicle, Vasquez said.

That’s when Derek Lee, who goes by the name Doc Rapper, said he got into the argument and Caan told him to butt out. Someone threw a punch and Caan retrieved a .38 caliber semiautomatic handgun, Vasquez said.

″He pulled a gun and pointed it at my chest,″ Lee said. ″There was no reason he should have pulled a gun on me.″

The case would be referred to the city attorney’s office for misdemeanor weapons charges that could, upon conviction, result in a six-month jail term, Vasquez said.

Caan’s publicist, Paul Bloch, said Friday he was unable to reach the actor for comment.

Caan’s brother, Ron, told KCAL-TV the actor responded when his friend was threatened. ″He’s not the right person to be threatened,″ Ron Caan said.

Caan has made more than 30 films, most recently playing a tough football coach in ″The Program.″ He was nominated for an Academy Award as best supporting actor in the role of gangster Sonny Corleone in 1972′s ″The Godfather.″

Last September, Caan was questioned by police after an acquaintance fell eight stories to his death while trying to reach an apartment where Caan was staying. Police ruled the death an accident.
